What's the Big Bus about mental health?

There's going to be a lot of fuss and a Big Bus about mental health at Petty Cury in Cambridge city centre on World Mental Health Day, Friday 10th October. Why? Because 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem during the course of a year yet the stigma attached to mental health is stopping people seeking help when they need it most.

Cambridge MP, David Howarth, who will be visiting the Bus at 10am, recently commented in an interview with the Cambridge mental health radio programme, Making Mental Notes:

"Mental illness is one of the biggest issues facing society today, and one of the most serious parts of the problem is allowing people to overcome the stigma of having a mental illness so that they are not frightened to admit they are ill."

The truth is that no one is immune from mental ill health although some people are more susceptible than others. For example, did you know that 1 in 4 university students will suffer from some form of mental health problem during their studies (Royal College of Psychiatrists 2003), I in 4 women will require treatment for depression at some point in their lives (National Institute for Clinical Excellence, 2003) and 1 in 4 unemployed people suffer from a mental health problem (Office of National statistics, 2001).

Visitors to the Bus will be able to find out about 70 local services that provide support such as access to training and work, financial and legal help, counselling, a listening ear, advocacy, support, advice and guidance. Representatives from these services will also be available to give information directly, including free legal advice. General information on mental health will also be available, including an awareness raising exhibition and a film crew will be interviewing passers by about their attitudes and views on mental health.

"Our friendly film crew will be asking passers by questions such as, 'do you know what 1 in 4 refers to?' and, 'what's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of mental health?'. It should be an interesting way of getting people to explore their own attitudes and perceptions and, in turn, we will learn more about the work that we need to do to help break down public misconception, stigma and discrimination." Amanda Price, Lifecraft Campaigns Officer and Coordinator of The Big 1 in 4 Bus Campaign.

The Big 1 in 4 Bus campaign is also running from the website
www.1in4.org.uk with campaign material being distributed to local libraries, community centres, GP surgeries, universities and colleges.
